Southern Africa Philanthropy Foundation (SAPF), formerly known as CAF Southern Africa (SAPF), has been represented in South Africa, since 1997, and was formally registered in 2000.

SAPF is a registered non-profit organisation (NPO) with Public-Benefit Organisation (PBO) status. SAPF is a civil society infrastructure organisation which operates as an intermediary at the intersection of philanthropy and civil society.

The primary goal of this funding opportunity is to foster stronger ties and build relationships between the United States of America and South Africa through activities at American Spaces in Gauteng, that increase understanding, connections, and the sharing of information and ideas between Americans and South Africans at the people-to-people level.

SAPF has been awarded a grant by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Pretoria to manage youth development programming at their American Spaces.

SAPF is pleased to announce this call for proposals from organizations, institutions, and individuals with experience in delivering Thematic Art Workshops for young people. The program will be implemented at the American Corner Pretoria as part of a larger focus on STEM programming for youth.

The American Corner Pretoria (ACP), created in partnership with the City of Tshwane, is situated in the heart of Pretoria at the Es'kia Mphahlele Community Library. The young visitors to the American Corner tend to be between 18-35 years. A majority have completed matric, others are university students and still others are unemployed and not currently studying or in training. The American Corner comprises two lecture/training rooms which range in capacity from accommodating 20 to 60 individuals. The space also boasts a makers space, art room and podcast booth. ACP provides high-speed Internet access and state of the art equipment (e.g. access to computers and tablets for a limited number of young people), together with print and digital resources. In addition to the physical space, they also run online courses, lectures and share opportunities with patrons.

We are calling for proposals to deliver Thematic Art workshops to empower young emerging visual artists (aged 18-35), with the skills to convey a message or story through their art. The program will result in participants having a deeper understanding of the value of conveying messages through their art, as well as develop skills which they can apply to their work. The program could include an art exhibition at the American Corner Pretoria. The thematic topics should support Mission ICS goals which include human rights, environment, culture, etc.

The program could take place over multiple weeks or months. Note ACP is open during business hours during the week.

• address recruitment and how new audience will be recruited for/ through the program.

Candidates should preferably be Pretoria based or at the least, Gauteng based.

The program could take place over a series of weeks, or less regularly over a series of months, depending on how the implementing partner recommends the program timetable be structured. The timetable would need to take into account the likelihood of participants' availability, what would achieve the greatest outcomes for the participants, and how it aligns with the space and other programming.

Note ACP is open during business hours during the week and on Saturday mornings. The program would begin in June 2024 and would need to be completed by no later than mid September 2023.

The total available for this program is R90 000.

The program will be implemented at the Mae Jemison U.S. Science Reading Room as part of a larger focus on STEM programming for youth.

We are calling for proposals to deliver an introductory educational virtual reality workshops for high school learners who attend Mae Jemison U.S. Science Reading Room located at the University of Pretoria Mamelodi Campus. The program aims to expose high school learners to new innovative technology, educate them about the possibilities of the technology, as well as offer them an immersive educational experience. The program should aid in fostering understanding of American culture and therefore could include a virtual tour of an American museum. Mae J is equipped with 15 virtual reality headsets (BOBOVR Z6 Foldable Wireless VR Headset) which should be utilised for the program.

Educate learners about the applications of VR, as well as the career options and subject choice, in order to pursue a career in technology based sciences.

Expose learners to U.S. Universities/ museums/ similar, through the VR medium.

Charities Aid Foundation (Southern Africa) is looking to engage the services of a suitably qualified and experienced person, on contract basis until 30 September 2023, for its client, the US Embassy. The position is based in Pretoria at the American Corner in Pretoria.

Position: Assistant American Corner Coordinator

In close consultation with the American Corner Pretoria Project Coordinator proactively designs and coordinates the delivery of a wide range of outreach and professional development programs that align with and advance the American Corner, the U.S. Mission to South Africa (Mission) and Department of State (DOS) goals. Work closely with the City of Tshwane and the Pretoria Public Affairs Section to leverage shared resources and provide comprehensive programming to target audiences. Assists with developing social media outreach campaigns to target audiences. 1. Report for duty as per shift roster, providing library services. Create a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.

CAFSA is searching for a part-time Cultural, Art, and English Language Program Assistant at the American Corner Cape Town (ACCT). 

BACKGROUND: The primary goal of the American Corner in Cape Town (ACCT) is to foster stronger ties and build relations between the United States of America and the Republic of South Africa through programs and activities that facilitate the sharing of information and ideas and people-to-people exchange between Americans and South Africans.

CAFSA is the implementing partner for the U.S. Mission in South Africa’s American Spaces program.  In that role, it coordinates with the Public Diplomacy Section (PD) of the U.S. Consulate in Cape Town to design and implement programs and activities that advance goal of the ACCT and manage the space itself.  The ACCT is located in and hosted by the Cape Town Central Library, so ACCT staff, PD, and CAFSA also coordinate closely with the Central Library team related to programming in and public access to the space.

JOB OVERVIEW AND CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:  

In coordination and consultation with CAFSA, the PD Section of the U.S. Consulate in Cape Town and the Space Activation, Outreach and STEM Program Director, the Cultural, Art, and English Language Program Assistant will lead design and implementation of culture, art, and English language programming in the ACCT in support of the ACCT’s goals and will assist the Space Activation, Outreach, and STEM Program Director with management of day-to-day programming and some administrative tasks.

 Design and implement a program/activity plan for the ACCT utilizing culture — including history, society, trends, and current events — and art — including, but not limited to dance, theatre, film, fashion, fine arts, and music — and activities to enhance English language teaching and learning to increase understanding, cooperation, and exchange between Americans and South Africans.  

Together with the EducationUSA and English Language Coordinator, create engaging English language programming to improve oral, speaking, and reading skills among audiences whose primary language is not English.  

Identify target communities or participants for programs and create advertisements and outreach plans to engage those communities in ACCT activities.

Work with subgrantees and other guests for creating engaging programs, including by recruiting expert speakers or performers for programs. Report to PD and to CAFSA the outputs and outcomes of activities and programs. 

Assist in managing the ACCT on a daily basis including interacting with walk-in guests during open hours.  

The employee will assist with some defined administrative tasks for keeping the space active and functioning in coordination with and to back up the Space Activation, Outreach and STEM Program Director.  

Interface with the Central Library staff when needed for coordination of programs or activities.  

Attend regular meetings with CAFSA, PD and with the South African Mission’s American Spaces (AS) network and at times attend larger meetings and trainings among AS peers throughout the world.  

A deep interest and knowledge in cultural studies and the arts, as well as an appreciation for cultural diversity.

RFP: Fostering stronger ties between SA, USA

Charities Aid Foundation Southern Africa (CAFSA) is searching for a reliable, deadline-driven, and innovative brand, design, and strategic marketing agency in order to oversee renaming and rebranding transition.

CAFSA is an independent non-profit organisation that promotes and facilitates effective giving, volunteering, and social investment. CAFSA has been represented in South Africa since 1997 and in 2000 became a registered Section 21 not-for-profit and public benefit organisation.

In 2021, CAF Global (CAF) group undertook a strategic review which highlighted the critical need for greater clarity around the CAF brand by our customers and staff. Our objective is to achieve greater clarity on what CAF group is and does as a global organisation linked to our purpose to accelerate progress in society towards a fair and sustainable future for all. As part of this brand review CAF Global, headquartered in the UK, is ceasing the use of CAF sub-brands, and the use of the CAF brand name by organisations that are outside of the CAF Global group, including CAF Southern Africa (CAFSA).

These changes will require CAFSA to undertake a re-naming exercise. The brand change can offer CAFSA full control over its brand identity as well as clarity on the partnership with CAF group. CAF will support the CAFSA team in developing and deploying a new brand identity which reflects the work they do and the organisation which they are today, as well as their aspiration for growth in the future. This identity will reflect a partnership with CAF however we will no longer use the CAF brand name. CAF will provide financial support and expertise to help the CAFSA team navigate this brand name change. Project management, of which will be run locally by CAFSA.


CAFSA is seeking a suitable service provider to execute specific components of renaming, rebranding, brand building, and communication strategy. The service provider will work closely with a larger team to develop a brand strategy, name, and identity, which aligns with our mission, values, and goals, and resonates with our target audiences. The provider will be responsible for delivering on two of the three aspects of the project viz. the Development/Design and Delivery phases.

In addition, the service will assist CAFSA with developing and executing a communication plan that effectively promotes our new brand, engages our stakeholders, and creates a buzz around our mission and impact. The provider will leverage media relations expertise and digital marketing skills to reach out to journalists, bloggers, influencers, and social media platforms to amplify CAFSA’s message and generate positive coverage. The period of the assignment is contingent upon the completion of the Discovery Phase, which is expected to be concluded by the end of July 2023, although it is anticipated that there will be some overlap, until final completion, on or before, 30th of November 2023.

The rebranding exercise will be done through three core steps: Step 1 – Discover, Step 2 -Develop/Design, and Step 3 – Deliver. The work needs to crystalise the point of difference for CAFSA through the development of purpose, values and identity through a structured brand house and system of design. We invite agencies to develop a fully costed resource and timing plan for the work required to execute the two phases of change viz. Develop/Design and Deliver. 

Discovery Phase – This component has already been out-sourced to a research house and will not form part of the scope of work of this RFP. A qualitative and quantitative research report will be made available to the successful agency, as a basis to commence the Development/Design and Delivery Phases.

The Discovery Phase aims to understand the size and scope of CAFSA brand change through research, including qualitative research with customers, prospects, and non-customers. This needs to include:

Review of current identity (personality, tone of voice, visual identity)
