CAF World Giving Index 2024

Around the world, a record 4.3 billion people helped someone they didn’t know, volunteered time or donated money to a good cause in the preceding month according to the Charities Aid Foundation’s World Giving Index 2024.

The world’s most generous country is Indonesia for the seventh year in a row, where 90% of Indonesians donated money to charity and 65% volunteered their time. Kenya is the second most generous country, rising from third last year. Singapore has risen 19 places to third, increasing its overall index score from 49% to 61% year on year. The positive results for Singapore follow recent Government initiatives to bolster philanthropy and volunteering.

The CAF World Giving Index is one of the biggest surveys on giving ever produced, interviewing millions of people around the world since 2009. This year’s Index includes data from 142 countries with people asked three questions: have they helped a stranger, given money or volunteered for a good cause during the past month.

The CAF World Giving Index 2024 also finds:

The top 10 countries includes only two of the world's largest economies (Indonesia and the United States), while one of the poorest countries in the world – The Gambia – is ranked in the fourth place.

Morocco saw the world’s largest year-on-year increase in donating money, with interviews taking place in the wake of the devastating earthquakes that hit the centre of the country in September 2023. Just two per cent of people donated money to charity in 2022, but this rose to 18% last year, and volunteering rates doubled from 8% to 16%.

Greece is the biggest riser this year, having consistently increased its ranking since 2013. It has a particularly high score for helping a stranger – significantly above the European average and particularly high among young people.

Over the last decade Ukraine, Indonesia, Chad, Russia, and China are the most improved, each having recorded an increase of 25 points or more.

This individual will be responsible for identifying opportunities to run employee volunteering programs that include payroll giving, fundraising, identification, planning and implementing volunteering events, day-to-day operation and updating of an online employee volunteering platform, and working closely with clients and internal project management teams.

Day-to-day operation, update and maintain clients’ online employee volunteering platform with relevant content and information related to volunteering initiatives.

Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, or a related field.

2+ years of experience in web and social media management, preferably in a CSR or non-profit environment.

Knowledge of volunteering best practices and trends, and a passion for social impact.

Familiarity with web design and content management systems.

This property will be donated to an NGO that is involved in assisting persons who are the victims of gender-based violence and abuse.  SAPF wishes to appoint a qualified service provider to execute the minor construction work and renovations.

The program will be implemented at the American Corner Pretoria as part of a larger focus on STEM programming for youth.

The American Corner Pretoria (ACP), created in partnership with the City of Tshwane, is situated in the heart of Pretoria at the Es'kia Mpahlele Library. The young visitors to the American Corner tend to be between 18-35 years. A majority have completed matric, others are university students and still others are unemployed and not currently studying or in training. The American Corner comprises two lecture/training rooms which range in capacity from accommodating 20 to 60 individuals. The space also boasts a makers space, art room and podcast booth. ACP provides high-speed Internet access and state of the art equipment (e.g. access to computers and tablets for a limited number of young people), together with print and digital resources. In addition to the physical space, they also run online courses, lectures and share opportunities with patrons. 


Goals and Objectives of the program – 3D Design and Prototyping Program:

We are calling for proposals for the design and implementation of a 3D design and prototype program for young innovators and entrepreneurs (ages 18-35) which will provide them with skills to turn their invention idea into a product that can be used to solve real world/everyday problems and taken to market.

The broad objectives for this program include:

 Participants acquire entrepreneurship skills.

Participants develop their idea which attempts to solve a real world/every day problem.

Participants gain a thorough understanding of how to develop a product based business from idea to prototype/ product.

Participants learn how to use a 3D printer and develop a prototype of their product or invention using the ACP 3D printer.

The curriculum demonstrates U.S. best practice and/or includes U.S. curriculum/ speakers or in some way promotes U.S. Developed knowledge.

Include how the program will promote SA and U.S. Linkages, for instance include curriculum or links to American content/ speakers/ applications/ resources.

Address recruitment and how new audience will be recruited for/ through the program.

Include references and evidence to prior programming to be supplied.

Candidates should preferably be Pretoria based or at the least, 
Gauteng based.

The program could take place over a series of weeks, or less regularly over a series of months, depending on how the implementing partner recommends the program timetable be structured. The timetable would need to take into account the likelihood of participants' availability, what would achieve the greatest outcomes for the participants, and how it aligns with the space and other programming.

Note ACP is open during business hours during the week and on Saturday mornings. The program would begin in June 2024 and would need to be completed by no later than mid September 2023.

The total available for this program is R90 000.

SAPF is pleased to announce this call for proposals from organizations, institutions, and individuals with experience in delivering Virtual Reality for young people. The program will be implemented at the Mae Jemison U.S. Science Reading Room as part of a larger focus on STEM programming for youth.

We are calling for proposals to deliver an introductory educational virtual reality workshops for high school learners who attend Mae Jemison U.S. Science Reading Room located at the University of Pretoria Mamelodi Campus. The program aims to expose high school learners to new innovative technology, educate them about the possibilities of the technology, as well as offer them an immersive educational experience. The program should aid in fostering understanding of American culture and therefore could include a virtual tour of an American museum. Mae J is equipped with 15 virtual reality headsets (BOBOVR Z6 Foldable Wireless VR Headset) which should be utilised for the program.

Offer learners an experience of how VR can be used to connect with other spaces and places.

Educate learners about the applications of VR, as well as the career options and subject choice, in order to pursue a career in technology based sciences.

Expose learners to U.S. Universities/ museums/ similar, through the VR medium.

RFP: AMERCIAN SPACES - Introductory educational Virtual Reality Workshops for high school learners.

Charities Aid Foundation (Southern Africa) is looking to engage the services of a suitably qualified and experienced person, on contract basis until 30 September 2023, for its client, the US Embassy. The position is based in Pretoria at the American Corner in Pretoria.

Position: Assistant American Corner Coordinator

In close consultation with the American Corner Pretoria Project Coordinator proactively designs and coordinates the delivery of a wide range of outreach and professional development programs that align with and advance the American Corner, the U.S. Mission to South Africa (Mission) and Department of State (DOS) goals. Work closely with the City of Tshwane and the Pretoria Public Affairs Section to leverage shared resources and provide comprehensive programming to target audiences. Assists with developing social media outreach campaigns to target audiences. Develops strong partnerships with tech innovators, civil society, entrepreneurs, business and cultural leaders, artists, educators, and students.

Reports to the designated supervisor, as assigned by the City of Tshwane.

Working Hours: 12:30-16:30 Monday to Friday – 20 hours per week

1. Report for duty as per shift roster, providing library services. Create a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.

2. Keep statistics on visitors and programs.

3. Promote and market the use of electronic (online databases) and print resources available, at the Corner.

4. Provide research assistance to members using online databases and reference materials.

5. Schedule venue bookings for speakers, workshops training, and program activities taking place at the Corner.

6. Assist with marketing programs, recruiting audiences, program set-up and preparation.

7. Troubleshoot minor equipment problems, speaking with Embassy staff when technical assistance/repairs required.

8. Manage internet café by scheduling and monitoring patron usage of computers and equipment.

9. Assist the American Corner Project Coordinator with identifying resources and needs and recommending additions.

10. Submit program reports and monthly statistics, to the American Spaces Coordinator.

11. Keep the American Corner neat and tidy, including re-shelving materials, returning chairs and furnishings to their place, and ensuring equipment is shut down and secured at the close of each day. Cleaning up materials, trash, and any refreshments promptly, at the end of programs.

1. Contribute to the management and oversight of outreach and programming at the American Corner.

2. Work closely with the American Spaces Coordinator at the U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Section, to develop a strategic annual plan for outreach and a monthly calendar of events.

3. Design innovative and engaging programs that align with the American Corner Pretoria, U.S. Mission and DOS goals and priorities.

4. Contribute to the coordination of all phases of program management, focusing on, analysing target audiences, and developing the most effective format to reach them.

5.Develops strong partnerships with tech innovators, civil society, entrepreneurs, arts organizations, educational institutions including colleges/ Universities and high schools, which can partner with ACP to deliver quality programming that is effective and mutually beneficial.

6. Expand the American Corner program to other City of Tshwane Libraries in different communities.

7. Build partnerships with local community radio stations to promote American Corner programs

Vacancy: Assistant American Corner Coordinator

CAFSA is searching for a part-time Cultural, Art, and English Language Program Assistant at the American Corner Cape Town (ACCT). 

BACKGROUND: The primary goal of the American Corner in Cape Town (ACCT) is to foster stronger ties and build relations between the United States of America and the Republic of South Africa through programs and activities that facilitate the sharing of information and ideas and people-to-people exchange between Americans and South Africans.

CAFSA is the implementing partner for the U.S. Mission in South Africa’s American Spaces program.  In that role, it coordinates with the Public Diplomacy Section (PD) of the U.S. Consulate in Cape Town to design and implement programs and activities that advance goal of the ACCT and manage the space itself.  The ACCT is located in and hosted by the Cape Town Central Library, so ACCT staff, PD, and CAFSA also coordinate closely with the Central Library team related to programming in and public access to the space.

JOB OVERVIEW AND CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:  

In coordination and consultation with CAFSA, the PD Section of the U.S. Consulate in Cape Town and the Space Activation, Outreach and STEM Program Director, the Cultural, Art, and English Language Program Assistant will lead design and implementation of culture, art, and English language programming in the ACCT in support of the ACCT’s goals and will assist the Space Activation, Outreach, and STEM Program Director with management of day-to-day programming and some administrative tasks.

 Design and implement a program/activity plan for the ACCT utilizing culture — including history, society, trends, and current events — and art — including, but not limited to dance, theatre, film, fashion, fine arts, and music — and activities to enhance English language teaching and learning to increase understanding, cooperation, and exchange between Americans and South Africans.  

Together with the EducationUSA and English Language Coordinator, create engaging English language programming to improve oral, speaking, and reading skills among audiences whose primary language is not English.  

Identify target communities or participants for programs and create advertisements and outreach plans to engage those communities in ACCT activities.

Work with subgrantees and other guests for creating engaging programs, including by recruiting expert speakers or performers for programs. Report to PD and to CAFSA the outputs and outcomes of activities and programs. 

Assist in managing the ACCT on a daily basis including interacting with walk-in guests during open hours.  

The employee will assist with some defined administrative tasks for keeping the space active and functioning in coordination with and to back up the Space Activation, Outreach and STEM Program Director.  

Interface with the Central Library staff when needed for coordination of programs or activities.  

Attend regular meetings with CAFSA, PD and with the South African Mission’s American Spaces (AS) network and at times attend larger meetings and trainings among AS peers throughout the world.  

A deep interest and knowledge in cultural studies and the arts, as well as an appreciation for cultural diversity.
